Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. Gathering to give thanks for our blessings and each other is the best way I can think of to celebrate this spectacular season of abundance.

Fall gives us so many gifts from nature to fill our eyes with wonder, our homes with beauty and our plates with the feast of the season. I hope you will honor this day of gratitude by embellishing your Thanksgiving table with the gifts of nature that surround you.

Head outside

The first place to head when starting to set your Thanksgiving table should be your own backyard. Fall brings extraordinary color into the garden, and what could be more appropriate at this time of year than to show our appreciation for nature?

A basket and a pair of nippers are all you need to gather fall leaves, leafy greens,  berries, branches and the last of the summer’s flower petals.

If you like, you can augment your collection with what you find at the supermarket, farmer’s market or nursery. The produce section offers all kinds of possibilities for your creative eye!

Color and Light

Start with warm colors – the ones between red and yellow on the color wheel. Tone-on-tone shades of soft apricot, salmon, rich golds, rosy pinks, bold oranges and vibrant reds. Next, add the complimentary colors, the blues and greens on the opposite side of the color wheel, to cool down the overall palette. Finally, everything gets grounded with neutral colors, the ones that aren’t on the color wheel – brown, gray, black and white.

Lighting is the finishing touch, and you can never, ever have too many candles! Tall, short, warm colors and cool colors. When the candles are lit, the combination of the light and the warm colors makes everything and everyone in the room glow. Candles are the easiest and most foolproof way to create a warm, elegant and intimate atmosphere for your holiday table.

Even if you don't have a bountiful backyard, a beautiful and traditional Thanksgiving centerpiece can come right from the grocery store.

Have fun setting your holiday table this year by thinking outside the box. Mix up colors of plates and napkins, use drapery rings for napkin holders, pull out your wedding china and mix it in with some funky flatware and mismatched glasses – then tie everything together with color and texture from nature. Do the unexpected and surprise your friends and family with an enchanting holiday table creation.
